Memotech began in the early 1980s in Oxfordshire, England, originally producing high-quality memory expansion modules for the Sinclair ZX81. Their reputation for sleek, anodized black aluminum designs led them to create their own full-fledged computer: the Memotech MTX series, launched in 1983. Featuring a robust metal casing, full-size mechanical keyboard, Z80A processor, and advanced graphics and sound capabilities, the MTX512 was particularly admired for its professional appearance and expandability.
Despite technical excellence, Memotech struggled to find a strong foothold against established competitors like Sinclair and Commodore. A bold but ill-fated push into the Soviet Union market and the collapsing UK home computer boom led to financial difficulties. By 1985, Memotech had exited the consumer market, shifting focus to professional and industrial computing. Today, Memotech remains respected for its engineering quality and for producing one of the best-built home micros of its era.
