Released in 1983, the Atari 600XL was part of the XL series — a redesign of Atari’s 8-bit computer line with a sleeker, more modern aesthetic. Equipped with a 6502C CPU, 16KB of RAM, and the same ANTIC/GTIA/POKEY chipset combo used in earlier models, the 600XL offered full compatibility with most Atari 400/800 software. It featured a chiclet-style keyboard, built-in BASIC, and an enhanced OS, all in a more compact case. While it was less expandable than the 800, it served as a solid entry-level machine and gained popularity due to its attractive price and sleek design.
